Tryout FAQ's

What do I bring to the tryout?

  • Cash for Tryout Fee
  • All hockey gear
  • Any jersey/socks (we will provide a pinny)

Am I allowed to watch my child's tryout?

YES!

What if my child's age group isn't listed?

If your child's age/birth year isn't listed, it could be for one of the following reasons:

  • We aren't having a team for that age
  • The team is invite-only

Does everyone that tries out make a team?

No. Unfortunately we don't have enough teams for all the kids that want to play. In addition, we only take players that we think are ready for this level of competition.

Following our September tryout, the kids that do not get invited to join a team may be invited back for another tryout in January if the team is not full.

Some teams will fill their roster following the September tryout and some teams will leave open spots to be filled at the January tryout. Typically our younger teams will leave more spots open because of how much kids can change/develop in a short amount of time. This changes year to year and we won't know if we are holding a January tryout until after the Sept tryouts are over.

When will we find out the results of the tryout?

In general, results will be ready within a week. Some teams may need extra time. Tryout updates and results will be posted on this page.

Is Hometown Hockey a part of the Youth Elite League (YEL) through Youth Hockey Hub?

YES! We are proud to announce that we are 1 of 8 programs chosen to participate in the Youth Elite League! Details for the 2026 season are in the works and some changes will be made to the league. Most likely we will have one team participating in the league at the 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 age groups.

How do I know which team my child should try out for?

All teams are formed by birth year so you will sign up for the birth year of your child. It DOES NOT matter which month they were born in, only the year. This is different from association (winter) hockey where month/grade do matter. In AAA Hockey, ONLY the birth year matters. This means that even if your child is born on December 31st, they still can only play for their birth year.

Can my child try out for an OLDER birth year?

For Boys - Only if it is pre-approved by us.

For Girls - Yes, if you think that will be the best fit (however we recommend also trying out for their own birth year)

Can my child try out for a YOUNGER birth year?

No (For both boys and girls)

What levels of teams do you offer?

Elite = Top level, competes at the local and national level (similar to a "AA" winter team)

Blue = Competes locally at the "upper open" level (similar to an "A" level winter team)

Black = Competes locally at the "open" level (similar to a "B" level winter team)

The number/level of teams we have at each age depends on talent level, interest and coach availability.

What are the birth years for the Girl's Teams in 2026?

U8 - 2017 and 2018

U10 - 2015 and 2016

U12 - 2013 and 2014

U14 - 2011 and 2012

U16 - 2009 and 2010

U19 - High School Age
